Kurt Knispel *custom build

Post by T.H.A.W. on Sat Aug 02, 2014 5:25 pm

A small man, but with a huge smile and personallity...not to mention the greatest tanker of all time with an astonishing 168 confirmed tank kills.
For his achievments on the battle field he was awarded several metals.

Iron Cross E.K.II (2nd Class)
Iron Cross E.K. I awarded after actions at Kursk July 1943. He destroyed 27 T-34's in 12 days during this battle.
Winterschlacht im Osten The so called Frozen Meat Order.
Wound Badge (silver)
Panzerkampfabzeichen (silver)
Panzerkampfabzeichen 100 assaults. (Gold)
German Cross in Gold on 20 May 1944 as Unteroffizier in the 1./schwere Panzer-Abteilung 503
The only NCO in the German Army mentioned in the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] on 25 April 1944 for the destruction of 101 enemy tanks, which was submitted by RKT Dr. Franz Baeke.

That said, please enjoy the photos, as much as I did the build.

As for the build....
I started out with an old 21C head and body.
I was going to Sculpt the head, but being in such a hurry to finish, I decided to add the features I needed to the old sculpt.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
original 21Ct sculpt.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I then added the strong "Cro-Magnon" eyebrow features, and high cheek bones.

I then sculpted the beard & hair...all done with Sculpey.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
With Knispel being such a small featured man, I used the Dremel to grind down the shoulders, chest, & arms, to "thin" him up a bit.
I also cut about 1/2 inch of the length of the arms and legs to shorten them up. I drilled a 9/64 hole in both the arms and legs to re-attach the hands & feet to the shortened limbs.
The overall height of Knispel is now about 10.5 inches.

Thanks for looking.

Amazing likeness! The tutorial is great too. My only question, is this, why not do 1/4" above and below the knee and arm areas, instead of 1/2 off below the knees and 1/2 off of the lower arms? Not knit picking, just curious. Thanks for sharing this project with us. The result would be a figure that you pose in many different poses. I gather this was the pose that you wanted.

mutt71,
Thanks for the kind words.

The Simple answer is:
I did this total transformation in just a few short hours.

The Complex answer is:
This was the first time I had ever done a "make-over" on a 21C nude and head.
I was not sure what I was getting into, vs say, a DML body, that I have hacked up over 100 times. Unsure of what the outcome would be, and in a hurry to get the figure done without destroying a nude, or throwing time out the window, I figured this would be the quickest, easiest way, without having to take my time disecting a 21C to assure all the joints and such would remain intact. That being said, I am now a bit more confident the next time I decide to chop up an old 21C nude. These figures are damn near bulletproof! So I will not be afraid to do a more accurate job, with better articulation next time around.

Aslo, I may go back and do a bit of "tweekin" on Knispel, when time permits.
I need to chop off those "Dumbo" ears and sculpt some smaller ones...

Well, you did a damn fine job on him, in any case. I use the ones I have for dead under blankets! I may look at them a bit differently, after what you have done with this one. Thanks.

Mike, you did a fantastic jog on the redo. On a lighter note I think his Apache name is " Smiles A Lot "

Mike,
That's one cool looking figure, like your tutorial on how it was done.
