Sledge's most notable book "With the Old Breed:"... Terrific first person account of Pacific island warfare in WW2. Realistic, gritty. great book. His book was used as one of the 3 characters in "The Pacific" and it was also part of the PBS "War" series.
Sledge wrote a second book, a smaller book called "China Marine", a very interesting little known story of what happened to Sledge's Marine unit after the war ended. Instead of going home, his unit spent a year as peacekeepers in mainland China, working together with a neighboring Japanese unit to keep the Commies and the Nationalists apart in late 1945 to 1946.
Well worth your time to read. I couldn't put them down.
