Newly aquired DID Sdkfz 251C Erika
I spent most of the day driving to and from Southern NJ yesterday to pick up three newly acquired vehicles, a DID Sdkfz 251C, with a 2.8 Taper bore gun and carriage, as well as a bridging conversion kit to make it into a 251C7. I am naming her Erika, after my Daughter. I spent most of today, going over all three vehicles (251C, Horch and a Kruppe Protze), to check on any damage and repairs that I would make. I started with the 251 and found that I want to add a lot of stowage, a front MG mount for the front of the crew compartment. After dusting it off, I turned to the Horch. It had suffered some damage somewhere along the line, so I set out on repairs of the obvious. One tire was almost off of the rim in the back, so I spent about an hour repairing that, as all of the screws and nuts were in a parts baggie (Thanks TTT!) then onto the fender over that wheel. I had to call on some "tin knocking". I got things pretty well straightened out, to include the dashboard that had a fit issue. I put the doors on it and transferred the crew to the Whermacht as well as the other two crews. I am done for the day now, as it has just started to rain. I will post photos tomorrow, weather permitting.

Say Jack,
After all the modifications are done, get her outdoors before the weather turns foul for a couple of shots. I envy you guys with these vehicles.

Ken, I'd love to get them done and outside for photos, but, they each weigh a ton! LOL I doubt that they will be done before the snow falls. That won't stop me though.

When I bought this beast, the shipping invoice said it more than 60 pounds. It is a great model but the older I got the heavier it got.

Ya I know the feeling. I think my 251's weight in at between 60 and 70 lb each, but I think my heavyweight is the FOA Pz IV. Takes two people and a stretcher for that one.

Charlie, I am with you on that getting older part. I tried to pick up one of these vehicles to carry it out to my pick up, but, almost did a face plant inside Charlie's Man Cave. I knew they were heavy, and I know that my heart is blasted, but, I just had to step aside and let Charlie's son and my buddy move them. I went to the Cardiac Doctor today and he told me that my heart works at almost 1/2 of it's capacity. That was GOOD news, as it was working at 12 -15 5 just 2 years ago! I was also told that it will NOT get any better than this. I feel very blessed with the news that it is at half capacity.

Jack glad to hear that you've made a improvement on the health side of the world. I do hope that you will get even a little better even after the doc visit.

Best way to move the 251 is to take the links off. Will save you about 20 pounds, yeah all metal. How I move mine. Easy on Easy off.

Thanks Dave. I asked about that and they said that I was very lucky to have gotten to where I am now, but, to not expect anything more than it is now. One can only hope and pray.

Jack, you saw my carts for the "heavy" or big stuff. Metal rolling carts with adjustable shelves that you can roll around. Fairly cheap, assembles in 5 minutes. All you have to do is roll them to where you want to pose them for pics, and place them on the ground. Just be careful and don't overdue.
BTW - Now, I have so much room in my man cave, I'm finally going to dig out my Command Car I haven't had room for display in years.

The cart is sold as a "Chrome 3 tier Heavy Duty Utility Cart". I bought 3 from Amazon and am happy with them, 400 lb capacity, 250 lb capacity for each shelf. Shelves are all adjustable and have a lip around each shelf that can be up or down depending on your vehicle. A rail to move the cart around, which roll on big wheels easy.
I use 2 shelves for big guys and the bottom for parts.

Ignore the Mauser, the 2nd pic just to show the wheels.
The Scout Car is Taowan and is my last really heavy model. Not a problem so far. The "251" Jack bought was so heavy for me, it sat on the floor in the same spot for 5 years. I couldn't even get that up on a cart.

Looks good, great ideal with the carts. If I can ever afford one or two vehicles, that's what they'll be on.
Re: Newly aquired DID Sdkfz 251C Erika
Charlie, that is a great idea!! I didn't realize that they were on wheels to begin with. I am on the lookout for a 12 ft enclosed travel trailer that I can put my collection into instead of paying for a storage unit and also using my F-150 for storage. Those shelves would be a sure thing then for me.
By the way, I have 1/2 of the bridging equipment done for the 251C/7. It gave me fits at first, trying to identify the side rails, .but I got that ironed out. They are heavy in their own right, so there goes even ore weight to an already very heavy beasty

Re: Newly aquired DID Sdkfz 251C Erika
I finished putting the bridge sections together and thought I was well on the way with this part of the 251 Project. Well, I could not be more wrong! I forgot to fold several of the cross members, before riveting the rails together. So, I guess that I will walk away from it tonight and start undoing what I did today and do it all over again. Well lesson learned here! SMH
